Fall Meeting Schedule
Capital Punishment, Criminal Justice?
Tuesday, Nov. 15, 6:00 P.M., Wishcamper Auditorium, USM Portland
Although progress has been made in the worldwide abolition of the death penalty, the United States remains one of 23 countries that still carry out executions in the name of justice. This meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about this human rights issue recently brought into the public discourse with the execution of Troy Davis. A portion of the film The Thin Blue Line will be shown with featured remarks by Joshua Rubenstein, Northeast Director of Amnesty International. Brief commentary will be provided by representatives of the NAACP, ACLU of Maine and The Society of Friends with an emphasis on where our collective action can best be directed.
Civic Engagement
Tuesday, Dec. 20, 6:30 P.M., King Middle School, Portland
Our Political Action Committee teams up with Maine Equal Justice Partners in preparation for the second regular session of the 125th Maine Legislature convening on January 4, 2012. Issues discussed will be the anticipated state budget cuts, legislative bills returning from the last session which target civil and human rights, and critical areas needing renewed engagement on behalf of our most vulnerable families living in Maine. Join us and add your voice in the advancement of critical public policy.
